TULIPS: DECORATE YOUR HOME WITH FLOWERS

One of my favourite cut flowers are tulips. It's amazing the shapes they take when they start to open.

With a couple of tulips you can simply add instant colour and drama to your room.

I planted these in my garden two autumns ago. I find bulbs very rewarding, I never lift them off the ground when wilted and for the last two years I've been getting this amazing show coming spring. I just love nature and its gifts.........

Una de mis flores favoritas para adornar la casa son los tulipanes. Es asombroso las formas que toman cuando empiezan a abrirse. Con unos cuantos tulipanes puedes añadir de una forma simple y rápida un toque sofisticado y de color a tu entorno. Hace dos años planté los bulbos y cada primavera me enseñan su belleza sin haber prestado ningún cuidado o mantenimiento. Me encanta cómo es sabia la Naturaleza!

A few tips to keep your tulips looking good longer in the vase:

• Buy tulips with flower heads just starting to open (the bud should be closed, but with a hint of the flower color showing).
• Before arranging tulips, condition them by re-cutting the base of the stem with a clean sharp knife. This will open up the stem’s water uptake channels.
• A clean vase and cool water keep flowers fresh longer. A dirty vase leads to dirty water where bacteria can shorten the life of flowers.
• Cut flower food isn’t necessary for tulips – they just don’t need it.
• Tulips are big drinkers. Check the water level often and add water daily. For longest vase life, change the water every few days. Remember: cool water keeps flowers fresh longer.
• With proper care, tulips should open and bloom for four to eight days. The biggest enemy of longevity is heat. Keep the vase away from sources of heat (including direct sunlight, radiators, lamps and television sets).
• Over time, you may need to readjust the arrangement. Tulips seem to have minds of their own with stems that bend, twist and turn into new positions day by day. This behavior is caused by the dual effects of continuing stem growth and the gentle pull of light and gravity on the flower head. Unlike other cut flowers, tulips continue to grow taller in the vase (as much as an inch or more!).
• Tulips (like daisies and dahlias) look at home in any type of container, from the homeliest tin to the prettiest crystal vase.
• Combining tulips with daffodils or any other members of the Narcissus family is not recommended because narcissi (daffodils) exude a substance that shortens the life span of other flowers by clogging their water uptake channels. ( tips source here).

Consejos para que duren más tiempo bonitos: 

• Cómpralos cuando apenas se hayan abierto. 
• Antes de meterlos en el jarrón corta un poco la punta del tallo con un cuchillo afilado para que absorban más fácilmente el agua.
• Mantén el jarrón limpio y con agua fresca.
• Los tulipanes no necesitan alimento para flores.
• A los tulipanes les encanta beber! Comprueba que el nivel del agua es siempre adecuado, y  si ves que necesitan añádeles un poquito. Cambia el agua cada cierto tiempo.
• Con este mínimo cuidado los tulipanes duran abiertos de cuatro a ocho días. El mayor enemigo es el calor; mantenlos fuera de fuentes de calor como radiadores, televisión, lámparas y luz directa del sol.
• Al contrario que otras flores los tulipanes siguen creciendo en el jarrón y con los cambios de luz y el peso de la flor seguramente los tengas que mover de vez en cuando en el jarrón.
• No juntes tulipanes y narcisos pues éstos últimos segregan una sustancia que acorta la vida de los tulipanes taponando los conductos por donde los tulipanes absorben el agua.
